Runic Cross

Runic Cross Runic Cross GR Photography

The Runic Cross is a medieval Christian artefact which is thought to have been originally discovered in the slopes of the Leithen Valley and later in the foundations of the old Parish Church at Kirklands following its demolition, prior to the building of the current church. Clearly part of a Celtic Cross with intricate carving, it is now placed on the eastern wall of Innerleithen Church (formerly the Parish church) in Leithen Road. The plinth on which it now stands reads:

Shaft of Runic Cross found in foundation of Old Parish Church Innerleithen when demolished in 1871 by Robert Mathison Esq.
