Horseback Riding

Many of the hillside and forest paths around Innerleithen, and the Tweedside multi-use path from Walkerburn to Peebles, are able to be used for equestrian activities. Please take note, however, that the small bridge across the Leithen Water, connecting Leithen Mills and Montgomery Street, is not suitable for horses, for safety reasons. Equestrian activities and tuition can be arranged by:

  • Haughhead Stables

Further afield, you'll also find lessons available at Kailzie Equestrian Centre near Peebles.

Fishing

The River Tweed is renowned as one of the world's great fishing destinations. Especially during the summer, you can see the salmon leaping out of the water -- which makes the water itself a very tempting place to be! Fishing in the Tweed is managed by the River Tweed Commission, with fishing locations divided up into "beats" of around a mile or two in length. To try your hand at fishing, you'll need to book into your beat of choice. The nearest beats around Innerleithen are:
  • Glenormiston Fishing Beat
    Information and Bookings

Located to the west of Innerleithen, where the Tweed runs around the base of Caerlee Hill.
  • Traquair Fishing Beat
    Information and Bookings

Located to the south, where the Tweed skirts the edge of the grounds at Traquair House.
There are several other beats close to Innerleithen, at Cardrona and Horsbrugh to the west and at Upper Caberston near Walkerburn. And there are plenty more all along the length of the river.

Shooting and Hunting

  • Bird-hunting activities generally don't take place around Innerleithen, although there are opportunities in the wider area. These can vary from place to place, year to year, but have previously been available at Portmore Estate near Peebles, Yair Estate near Selkirk, and around Heriot and Lauderdale. For information on pheasant- and goose-hunting in the Moorfoot Hills around Innerleithen, try contacting DV Shooting.
